These Tender Threads
These Tender Threads
i. not macht erfinderisch (necessity is the mother of invention)
ii. you don't have points to anchor your life on
iii. all through the night
These Tender Threads is Stephanie Arnold's re-working of Christina Vantzou’s ambient improvisatory tracks, combined with fragments of family oral histories on the subject of remembering and forgetting. Edited fragments of interviews are reinforced through the live music which mimics the rhythm and contour of each phrase while Christina Vantzou's ambient tracks flow underneath. Each movement features a voice belonging to a solstice trio member’s grandmother or mother. Reaching back their memories are threaded through the music, edited phrases stitched together, reflecting the patchwork nature of how we remember.

These tender threads
These tender threads trace their slender lines
back through thick years which intervene;
as persistent as tenacious water flow
they find a path. And even as clarity declines
they yield impressions of what memories mean,
clues to help us as we strive to know...
These tender threads though fragile to the touch,
are responsive to a gentle listening art,
a careful prompt, a judicious silent pause...
a followed thread may not look like much
or so it seems, but deviating take us to the heart
of a story, through obscure detail to surprising cause.
These tender threads call for nurture lest they fade -
a snatch of song, a phrase, a word, a taste
an aroma, a painting or a photograph -
ignored may sleep, but attended to is made
into a reaching sign which may have been erased
were it not so held on memory’s behalf.
These tender threads are byways to the past...
to be cherished where we may; through them we find a link
to who we are.... to who we might have been.
The world we take for granted will not last
in sharp edged clarity, no matter what we think...
when present finds past, the threads lie in-between
